Methods
A list of women practicing cardiothoracic surgery over a period of 58 years, between 1961 and 2019, was obtained. From this list of ABTS female diplomates, demographic descriptors were obtained using publicly available information to determine the number of years in practice, practice type, academic title(s), leadership titles(s), and the location and distribution of practice. Results
Of the 354 ABTS female diplomates found with Women in Thoracic Surgery and listed through the cardiothoracic surgery network website, publicly available information was found for 347. Of these 347 surgeons, 90 (25.4%) were categorized as AC surgeons and 134 (37.9%) were categorized as CTO, T, or C surgeons (Figure 1). Conclusions
The number of women entering medical school has nearly equalized that of men; however, this trend has not yet begun to take shape within the field of cardiothoracic surgery. During a 10-year period from 1999 to 2009, there were 1300 board-certified cardiothoracic surgeons, of whom only 103 (7.9%) were women.5 Although the growth rate of female cardiothoracic surgeons demonstrates a positive trend, it is difficult to place this value in context with the lack of publicly available data from other
