Methods
We performed a retrospective cohort study of adult residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota. Residency was verified based on home address. Population-based research is possible here because there are few health care systems in the county; the largest of them is the Mayo Clinic. Medical records from all sources of care are linked via the Rochester Epidemiology Project, enabling longitudinal capture of care for the county's residents. Results
Of 6836 adult residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota, who underwent HF during the study period, 936 (13.7%) had advanced HF. Of those with advanced HF, 338 (36.1%) had diabetes. Patients with diabetes were younger and had higher body mass index (BMI), worse kidney function and higher prevalence of many comorbidities (Table 1). Discussion
This population-based study of patients with advanced HF revealed several important findings. First, the prevalence of diabetes at the time of diagnosis of advanced HF was high, at 36.1%. Patients with diabetes were younger and had a higher prevalence of many comorbid conditions, including obesity and kidney disease, compared with those without diabetes.
